About ASHRAE

The American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), founded in 1894, is an international organization of 55,000 persons with chapters throughout the world. The Society is organized for the sole purpose of advancing the arts and sciences of heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration for the public's benefit through research, standards writing, continuing education and technical publications.

Through its membership, ASHRAE writes standards that set uniform methods of testing and rating equipment and establish accepted practices for the HVAC&R industry worldwide, such as the design of energy efficient buildings.  The Society's research program has implemented their 2010-2015 5-YEAR RESEARCH STRATEGIC PLAN that centers on Sustainability, which is defined as “the concept of maximizing the effectiveness of resource use while minimizing the impact of that use on the environment.”  ASHRAE currently funds close to $3 million in research annually, investigating numerous issues of importance in the industry today.  ASHRAE organizes broad-based technical programs for presentation at its semiannual meetings and cosponsors the International Air-Conditioning, Heating, Refrigerating Exposition, the largest HVAC&R trade show in North America.

Membership Advancement

There are (4) basic grades of membership, and a special program for recent college graduates with a student membership:

- STUDENT MEMBER
To qualify as a student member you must be studying or have an interest in an HVAC&R industry-related field.  Eligible students must be participating in an approved course of study in a university, college, junior college, or technical institute.

- AFFILIATE MEMBER
The Affiliate Member grade is ASHRAE's newest grade, introductory for applicants with a general interest in the Society’s programs and services.  Assignment to this grade is limited to those who are under 30 years of age who are first-time new members.

- ASSOCIATE MEMBER
The Associate Member grade is awarded to individuals who have less than twelve years of ASHRAE-approved industry experience in the heating, refrigerating, air-conditioning, or ventilating fields.

- MEMBER
The grade of Member is awarded to individuals who have twelve or more years of qualified industry-related experience.  Credit for industry related experience can be earned from any combination of approved education, work experience and professional registration.

- STUDENT TRANSFERS
For students seeking to upgrade their membership after college, a special program has been implemented by ASHRAE to reduce costs for the first 3 years of post-graduation membership.  The program is known as 16/40/40 to reflect the annual reduced costs for the three-year program.

To MANAGE YOUR MEMBERSHIP or be considered for grade advancement you must first update your ASHRAE bio online.  The easiest method is to notify membership@ ashrae.org via email that you have already updated your online bio and wish to be considered for grade advancement; ASHRAE's Admissions and Advancement Committee will then review your online bio and make the necessary changes to your member grade.  After updating your online bio you may alternately call or e-mail the Baltimore Chapter membership committee contact listed in the "Officers & Board" portion of this site to receive a "Membership Advancement Application" form for mail-in.
