"Geothermal Systems"

COMPETITORS:

The 2008-2009 ASHRAE HVAC Student Challenge was held at the offices of Leach Wallace Associates in Howard County on Saturday, February 28, 2009, with five competing teams from three local area high schools covering 3 Maryland counties:

Eastern Technical High School            Baltimore County                    2 teams

Harford Technical High School            Harford County                       2 teams

Howard High School                            Howard County                       1 team

CHALLENGE:

The theme for the 2008-2009 competition was "Geothermal Systems".  Student teams participated in a learning session on geothermal systems (David Hoffman, Gipe Associates) and were delivered a basic floor plan to use in their upcoming challenge.  Using their floor plan, each team was tasked with designing their own layout of a geothermal system, including calculating the number of wells and locating them.  Participants were required to answer fundamental engineering questions and to field questions regarding the technical session.

Baltimore ASHRAE extends its thanks to all teachers, students and ASHRAE members who participated in the competition, and for the efforts of those individuals who organized the challenge in order to once again make it a success.  Please direct any questions or additional comments on this past competition to the chapter student activities chairperson, Ken Frazier, via e-mail at students@ ashrae-balto.org or via phone at (410) 579-8100.  Please visit the OFFICERS & BOARD contact page on this website for additional contact information.
